TUCKAHOE, N.Y. Local VFW leaders are hoping future village projects will honor Tuckahoe veterans who have served the United States overseas.
At the Tuckahoe Village Board Meeting last week, VFW Post 2285 Commander Bob Foster, a Vietnam veteran, asked Mayor Steven Ecklond and board members to dedicate more village locations to important local military personnel.
How about naming the bridge, the Gold Star Mothers Bridge, or petitioning the MTA to name the Metro-North station, the Gold Star Mothers Station, he said. Lots of soldiers got on that train and never came back to Tuckahoe again.
During war times, the Tuckahoe station was the only railroad available in the area, he said. Foster said that wives walked with their husbands across the bridge to the train, many for the last time.
Its a simple way to say thank you for what they did and gave us, Foster said.
The VFW Commander also read from a letter requesting that the board consider dedicating a small piece of the Dante Avenue extension which runs down Columbus Avenue and has no houses or numbers associated with it after Robert Murray. Murray, a Tuckahoe resident, earned the Medal of Honor after jumping on a live grenade to save his fellow troops.
The veterans will get on board with anything. Well have a fundraiser and well be the ones to get the money for it, Foster said. Anything we can do for them is great. We cannot do enough for these brave men and women.
