YONKERS, N.Y. - After a lengthy discussion and debate, Yonkers officials have broken ground on the Larkin Plaza Redevelopment, one of the biggest projects the city has seen in decades.
On Wednesday, Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano was joined by officials from RXR Realty and Rising Development at 38 Nepperhan St., where they formally kicked off the $190 million Larkin Plaza mixed-use redevelopment.
According to the developers, the project “will complement the substantial public and private investment that has occurred in the city’s downtown in recent years,” including commercial projects, a downtown public library and renovated train station.
“(This) groundbreaking marks another monumental step in the revitalization efforts of our Yonkers waterfront,” Spano said. “This is the type of development we need in Yonkers to meet a growing demand for people who want to live, work and play in a diverse and urban environment.”
The project includes nearly 450 apartment units, with 35,000-square-feet of on-site space for shopping, restaurants and retailers. The residences will be constructed in two towers - one 17, the other 25 stories - with views of Van Der Donck Park, Saw Mill River, Palisades Cliffs and Manhattan skyline. The proposal also calls for a three-story parking structure that will include 539 spaces.
Construction at the Larkin Plaza is also expected to create hundreds of temporary jobs for the region.
“Building on the work of so many, Yonkers is well-positioned, once again, to be one of Westchester’s great economic and social hubs,” RXR CEO Scott Rechler stated. “This project will play an important role in the rebirth of this city, providing a top-quality alternative to the high-priced housing in New York City, while creating new jobs, services and tax revenue for the people of Yonkers.”
