Stamford Schools No Closer to New Superintendent

Despite Geoff Alswanger’s pleas, Stamford’s Board of Education continued to delay the search for a new superintendent. A resolution was tabled Tuesday that would have made the board serve as the personnel search committee for the interim superintendent and for a new superintendent.

“We’ve known for a month that [Dr. Joshua Starr] was leaving, we need to get moving,” Alswanger said in protest. The board called for a special meeting to be held at 6 p.m. Tuesday, June 7, to appoint an acting superintendent. The board will then wait until June 21 to discuss the process of hiring a superintendent.

Tuesday’s meeting was called to appoint each school board member to the personnel search committee that will run the search process and hire a new superintendent. However, the resolution came under fire after board Chair Polly Rauh said the committee would not work under the Freedom of Information Act and would not be forced to share information with the public.

Jerry Pia tried to clarify that the public is needed and will be involved early when focus groups are held to determine what the community would like to see in a new head of schools. He said everyone in the city is welcome to participate in the focus groups. Information will be held back only after the search narrows on individual candidates, Pia said.

“We may be the search committee, but it doesn’t mean we’re the only ones involved,” he said but was unsuccessful as the board decided to hold off on the resolution.

The superintendent position became available after Starr was hired to serve in the same role by the Montgomery County Public Schools in Maryland in April. Starr will start in Maryland on July 1.
