Big Night on Tap for Stamford Basketball Teams

STAMFORD, Conn. – Crosstown rivals meet in girls and boys Stamford high school basketball action Tuesday night while Trinity Catholic plays games pivotal to league playoff races.

The marquee matchup tips off at 7 p.m. at Westhill, where the Vikings host Stamford High. The Westhill girls visit Stamford High at 5:15. Trinity Catholic travels to Ridgefield for a 7 p.m. game in boys basketball, and Trinity girls host Ridgefield at 6 p.m.

In the boys game at Westhill, the Vikings (7-3 overall, 6-2 conference) and Black Knights (5-5, 4-4) meet in a critical game for the league playoff race. While Westhill has the better record, it is entering a difficult stretch in which it plays six straight games against playoff contenders. Stamford appears to be finding itself, riding a three-game win streak after going 2-5 to start the season.

“I like the way we’re playing,’’ said Westhill coach Howard White, whose team has won three of its last four games. “But it doesn’t matter. This game is against your rival. You can throw the records out the window.”

Trinity Catholic (8-3, 7-2) takes a three-game winning streak to Ridgefield, where the Tigers have been impressive in rolling to a 10-0 (8-0 in the league) start. Both teams appear headed for the league playoffs. The Crusaders are hoping to repeat their performance from Jan. 13, when they traveled to previously unbeaten Danbury and handed the Hatters their first loss.

The Stamford-Westhill girls game is also compelling. The Black Knights (7-5 overall, 7-3 league) snapped a three-game losing streak last Thursday with a win over Fairfield Ludlowe. Stamford is seeking to regain its form from the start the season, when it went 5-0. Westhill (7-5, 6-4) needs the game to stay in the thick of the playoff chase. Westhill has won five of its last six and features one of the league’s top scorers in Meg D’Alessandro.

Trinity Catholic’s girls (7-6, 6-5) are also seeking to stay in playoff contention in its game against Ridgefield (4-8, 4-6). The Crusaders are seeded 10th in the race for one of the eight league playoff berths.
