It’s been quite the experience for the future class of 2025, which has taken local trips during the first two months of class, learning tricks of the trade during hands-on lessons from experienced scientists and seamen.
In September, the students kicked off the school year with a bang, taking advantage of the last of the warm weather with a trip to sail on the SoundWaters schooner. During that trip, students worked teams and were taught about nautical engineering and the creatures living nearby n the Long Island Sound.
This month, students trekked to Cove Island Park, where they investigated Rocky Inter-tidal, Sandy Beach and Salt Marsh habitats, where they collected, categorized and analyzed the shells of crabs and snails.
According to second grade teacher and Bronxville Elementary School curriculum leader Justine Rutherford said that the students also “learned about the importance of the salt marsh in keeping local waters clean.”
“(The students) learned about the food web and adaptations of these creatures, marine debris and how to keep the Long Island Sound clean. SoundWaters educators lead both of these trips and guide the students through hands-on and meaningful experiences,” she said. “The trips support our curriculum as we study the Long Island Sound community and help the students become more aware of their role in protecting the environment.”
