Earlier this year, contracting crews were forced to halt construction on the $10 million renovation, when district officials were forced to terminate the contract of the general contract and reopen the bidding process to find a replacement.

Although it has been marred with problems, Bronxville Superintendent David Quattrone made note that the project remains under budget as they barrel toward completion.

“Although project completion was delayed several months due to the default of a contractor, it is important to note the project has remained under budget; there have been no cost overruns or additional costs to the taxpayers,” he noted. “In fact, liquidated damages and various backcharges may further reduce total costs.”

Renovations at the high school are something district officials have sought for years.

In May 2012, the Board of Education approved the borrowing of $5 million through a bond referendum to support the $10 million project. Another $2 million will come from a construction reserve the district created in 2011. The final $3 million is from the Bronxville PTA, School Foundation and other private donors.

As part of the extensive project, contractors will also overhaul the school’s science labs, with demolition set to begin over the summer while students are on break. Despite the delays on construction in the auditorium, the labs are still expected to be open and operational by the time the academic year starts in the coming days.
