Dating back to last year, the LIU Hudson-Bronxville Teacher Residency Program is designed to attract the top graduate students from the university, who are then mentored and supported by advisors in Bronxville who are veterans in the field of education.
The open house represented an expansion of the program, which “provides a limited number of paid, clinically rich and full-year experience for future teachers.”
The program provides LIU students the opportunity to get their feet wet as they get set to start their careers, while Bronxville students and teachers benefit from intelligent, innovative up-and-coming educators.
“Unlike a typical student-teaching experience, Bronxville Teacher Residents become an integral part of our school community for an entire year,” Bronxville Elementary School Assistant Principal Adrienne Laitman said. “As full-fledged members of grade-level teams, residents are involved in high-level professional development and curriculum planning.”
LIU Dean Sylvia Blake said the program includes educational seminars, networking opportunities and “an insider’s perspective on school culture and philosophy.”
The program is also paid and serves as a “resume builder.”
“The LIU Hudson-Bronxville Teacher Residency Program is designed to attract the highest quality graduate students into our teacher education programs,” she said. “The partnership is truly clinically rich, offers financial and job incentives to selected students, and by linking to a prominent district, enhances LIU Hudson’s visibility, reputation for excellence and service to the region.”
Applications for the upcoming Teacher Residency Program still are being accepted. Candidates with the necessary academic credentials who are prepared to commence master’s degree course work during the summer or fall can get more information here.
“Along with learning from master teachers, residents spend part of their time as substitutes. This ensures that Bronxville students have knowledgeable, highly-skilled instructors in the room when the teachers are absent,” Laitman said. “Overall, this program provides new educators with exceptional field experience while also ensuring consistent, quality instruction for the students in the district.”
