Bronxville Students Learn Contributions Of African American Women

BRONXVILLE, N.Y. -- The Chapel School PTO in Bronxville sponsored a school assembly for grades K-8 called "The Spirit to Overcome," which was an interactive program that explored the many contributions by African American women and celebrated the triumph of their undying spirit.

Students “met” Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Wilma Rudolph and Coretta Scott King, to name a few.

Held on Jan. 28, students “met” Harriet Tubman, Maya Angelou, Rosa Parks, Wilma Rudolph and Coretta Scott King, to name a few.

In the fight against prejudice, bias, social and political limitations, these women distinguished themselves and continue to serve as an inspiration to stay strong in the face of adversity.

The program took students back to the early days of slavery with women such as Sojourner Truth and Harriet Tubman.

They participated in an imaginary escape on the Underground Railroad.

Other highlights included various historical achievements and an examination of some of the many “firsts” achieved by African American women, including Bessie Coleman, who was the first American of any color or gender to receive an international pilot’s license.

“The assembly really brought history to life for the students,” stated one staffer.

This program enabled the Chapel School family to explore and celebrate traditions and accomplishments of people from a wide range of backgrounds.

According to James Dhyne, Principal of The Chapel School, “Music, art, literature, science, athletics, cuisine, dance and so much more are masterfully weaved into all areas of the curriculum.”

The Chapel School is located at 172 White Plains Road in Bronxville. An open house is scheduled for Friday, Feb. 5 & 12.
