EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Eastchester School District is being forced to expand the size of its classes but managed to find savings of more than $666,000 to keep the tax-levy increase within the state-mandated cap.

The district has proposed a budget of $75.7 million next year, an increase of more than 3 percent from this year’s $73.3 million budget. It remains uncertain what the tax-levy increase would mean for the tax rate because assessment rolls are not set until August.

The majority of the increases in the budget stem from increases in state mandates. Retirement contributions will rise from $4.2 million to more than $6 million for teachers.

To save nearly $300,000, a class section at each elementary school will be cut.

Due to lower enrollment, a first grade section will be eliminated at Waverly Elementary School. Second grade classes at Anne Hutchinson will have as many as 25 students each next year, up from 20 this year. In Greenvale, third grade classes will average about 23 students.

Additional savings comes from a federal grant program that will pay a special education teacher’s salary. Two rarely used bus routes at the high school will also be taken off the road.

Residents will have the opportunity to vote on the district’s proposed budget May 21.
