Nunes, 52, will finish his second academic year as the Emil and Elfriede Jochum Chair at Valparaiso University before taking over for George at Concordia beginning on July 1 next year.

Board of Regents Chairman T. Scott Wittman stated that Nunes was an obvious choice to take the helm from George next year.

“John’s unique combination of qualifications, skills and experience is perfect to lead the college going forward,” he said. “(He will) build on the 16 years of tremendous leadership provided by President George.”

Nunes is the author of “Voices from the City: Issues and Images of Urban Preaching,” and he is a graduate of Concordia University in Michigan.

The incoming president takes over from George, who was elected in 1999 following 20 years as a professor of psychology at Concordia. He holds multiple theology degrees and honorary doctorates from his alma mater, Ann Arbor and Carthage College in Wisconsin.

“Periodic changes in leadership breathe new vision and direction into the life of an institution,” George said. “After 16 years in my post, I believe that it is time for a transition. Through careful financial stewardship and thoughtful development of our academic programs, the College is well positioned for a new chapter of leadership.
