EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- "Building Bridges: Understanding People with Different Abilities" is returning to William E Cottle School in Eastchester the week of Feb. 22-26.

This year, each grade will still be focusing on understanding people with different types of disabilities:

  • Kindergartners will get an overview of disabilities.
  • First-graders will learn about people with sight impairments.
  • Second-graders will learn about hearing impairments
  • Third graders will focus on autism.
  • Fourth-graders will be learning about people with physical disabilities.
  • Fifth-graders will discuss learning disabilities.

These lessons will be done in each classroom where children will get the opportunity to participate in hands-on, interactive activities to allow them to experience first-hand what it is like to live with these differences.

Each grade will also attend an assembly with a speaker.

Parent volunteers are needed to make this program a success. The time commitment for volunteering is minimal – just 2-3 hours. Volunteers will work with one or two other parents in a classroom to run the sessions. Cottle School provides the script, the materials and will give volunteers a short training.

Training sessions will be held on Feb. 10, either at 8:30 a.m. or 7 p.m., at Cottle. These sessions will last 30-45 minutes.
