EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Eastchester Middle School has been certified as a “Common Sense School” for its commitment to innovation, alternative learning methods and technology for its students.

Common Sense Media - a national nonprofit organization dedicated to helping families succeed in the technological world - celebrated the school for its new Digital Citizenship course, which educates students about being “ethical digital citizens.”

Middle School Principal Scott Wynne said that, while the Internet provides students a myriad of opportunities, it also creates new concerns such as privacy and cyber-bullying.

“We believe that digital literacy and citizenship skills have become essential for students in the 21st century,” he said. “We are committed to teaching our students how to think critically, behave safely and participate responsibly in the digital world.”

Participants in the Digital Citizenship program are taught skills related to Internet safety, and how to protect private information. This includes what data to share, how to manage online relationships and how to navigate the Internet most effectively.

The program was designed and developed in part by middle school teachers John Blaser, Mary Ann Bernarducci, Anthony Rich and Andrew Weiss.

“We applaud Eastchester Middle School for embracing digital citizenship as an important part of their students’ education,” Rebecca Randall, the vice president of education programs at Common Sense Media said in a statement. “They deserve the highest praise for giving its students the foundational skills they need to compete and succeed in the 21st century workplace, and ethically in society at large.”
