EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- Eastchester Middle School students “mixed it up” last week during lunch periods, where they were assigned tables so they could eat with someone new.

It is a simple exercise, but studies have shown that it can reduce prejudice, misperceptions and bias, officials said. Questions were provided to facilitate conversations at tables.

“‘Mix It Up Day’ also promotes a sense of community and unity within the middle school. As an extension of the Dignity Act for All Students, getting to know peers and seeing areas in which we share common interests promotes tolerance and respect. Even just one student making a new connection, friend or having a different perspective is a success story,“ Middle School Assistant Principal Josh Elder said in a release.

Eastchester’s efforts mirror the national “Mix It Up” campaign started over a decade ago to fight prejudice by encouraging students to identify, question and cross social boundaries.
