EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Eastchester Union Free School District students in grades three through eight scored high on the New York State standardized test scores, out-performing both state and county averages, according to the results released Tuesday by the State Education Department (SED).

In April, students took math and English Language Arts (ELA) assessments. Test scores range from one to four. A student who earned a one or a two is below proficiency in that subject. A student who scored a three meets the proficiency standard while a four exceeds it.

The Eastchester School District had some of the finest scores in the county. On the math assessment, 91.61 percent of students met or exceeded proficiency standards, with more than half of the test-takers earning a four. On the ELA, 82.34 percent of students met or exceeded the standard, nearly identical to last year’s figure.

Countywide, 65.96 percent of students scored at or above the proficiency standard on the ELA, while 73 percent earned a three or a four on the math exam.

Statewide, students showed a slight improvement, as 55.1 percent of students met or exceeded the standard, an increase from 52.8 percent last year. Math scores also were higher, as 64.8 percent of students scored a three or four, up 1.5 percent from a year ago.

"There is some positive momentum in these numbers," said Board of Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch in a release. "But too many of our students, especially students of color, English Language Learners and special education students, are currently not on a course for college and career readiness."

Beginning in the fall, the state plans to install new, higher standards that can better measure the progression students are making. According to Education Commissioner John B. King Jr., next year’s tests will be more difficult. They plan to implement a more challenging curriculum designed to better prepare students for college and careers.
