The carnival will include food and fun for students of all ages, and also will provide elementary-aged children the opportunity to learn and interact with their elder students.

In a video promoting the carnival, Ryan Winnie, the senior class president and an adviser for the Human Rights Club, explained that he and his organization seek to make sure students in the high school are informed about what’s going on in the world.

“The human rights club has been a club at the school for a long time,” he said. “As a club, we try to create awareness for global issues throughout the school and community.

This year’s iteration of the Back to School Carnival features several new games and events for the children in attendance. There will be a Velcro wall, inflatable slides, pie-toss and a series of arts and crafts stations. Every club at the high school will also be available at individual booths with games, food or activities based on the club itself.

Entry to the carnival is free, but tickets, which will be used to purchase food or participate in activities, will cost 50 cents each. The proceeds from the carnival will be used to help fund a new anti-bullying program that was started by adviser Edye Caine.

According to the Human Rights Club, “our hope is that we are able to have enough people attend that we can start funding our newly-created program, which combats stereotyping, racism and bullying in our high school, as well as the rest of our schools in the community.

“We hope to start a chain effect and allow all students to learn in an environment where learning and not judgment or torment is the topic of focus for the students.”

The Back to School Carnival will be held from 12 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Eastchester High School.
