James Patrick McDermott and Zane Rivera-Heinz, from Bronxville; Jacqueline Groccia and Jacqueline Mazariego from Eastchester and Katherine Ferrone, Mykal Gerald and Jean Marie Gizzo from Tuckahoe have been named as the recipients of the Michael Frey Scholarship Award.

Each year, the Community Fund of Bronxville Eastchester Tuckahoe, Inc. awards scholarships in the name of Frey, a six-year veteran of the police force that was shot and killed by a sniper while responding to a shots fired call on March 21, 1996.

The winning students are chosen based on their service to the community and support of fellow students, according to Jeff Rohr, the president of the Community Fund.

“Leadership begins with helping others,” he said. “And we are proud to honor these outstanding future leaders.”
