Opportunities Abound At Somers High Career Fair

SOMERS, N.Y. – Thursday’s Community Partnership Service and Career Fair at Somers High School drew as many as 25 businesses and community groups, eager to share their goals and opportunities with interested students.

“We’re here to promote the free energy program, which enables people to get an audit free of charge, save money on their home heating and cooling bills, and save the environment as well,” said Frank Maricic, energy manager for the Town of Somers.

“There are great opportunities to make energy-efficient programs and jobs possible,” he said. “The great thing is, they’re local jobs, they’re good-paying jobs. That’s the message we’re trying to get across to young people.”

Approaching the environment from a different point of view, Janelle Robbins, executive director of the Bedford Audubon Society, pointed out that “without a healthy environment there will be no jobs. We give interns experience learning researching techniques and collecting real-life information with raptors and other birds.”

“We’re a local business and we’re part of the community,” said Joe Marconi, owner of the Osceola Garage. “We need to find pathways to the younger generation and help bring them on board.”

Many students stopped at the table where Somers High School counselor Mary Ellen Zappolo was recruiting volunteers for the new Peer Tutoring program.

“This is a great program to help students gain self-esteem as well as community service hours,” she said. “It also gives the students the feeling that they’re giving back to the community.”
