SCARSDALE, N.Y. – Students at the Hoff-Barthelson Music School Preschool Center in Scarsdale got an introduction into sustainability, as they fashioned a tableau crafted entirely from recycled materials.

Each year, 3 and 4-year-old students use old bottles, paper towel rolls, feathers, boxes and other recyclables to transform what was once trash into animals, people and other objects that are then placed in various environments.

The children take stories that they read and discussed in class and create dioramas using the figures they created with the recycled goods, which are then put on display in the Scarsdale Public library for all residents to view.

This year, children were given the task of recreating “The Nutcracker.” The two classes crafted mice, a Christmas tree, toy soldiers, Clara and the Nutcracker, which were then painted and decorated in the scene.

“The Nutcracker” diorama will be on display in the Children’s Room at the library through the end of February.
