Students To Walk To Raise Money For Tuckahoe Parish Gym

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – Students at the Immaculate Conception School in Tuckahoe will be walking their way closer to a new parish gymnasium this Friday.

The school is hosting a walkathon to raise money for the gym, which will benefit children who attend Immaculate Conception School as well as those who are part of the Immaculate Conception Parish.

Students and school officials have continued to fundraise since ground was broken on the gym in June. More than $3 million of the $3.5 million project has been raised. Members of the school have been collecting pledges for the walkathon to help reach that goal.

On Friday, the students in Grades 1 through 8 will be joined by parents, faculty and clergy during the walkathon. Starting between 10:30 and 11 a.m., participants will walk from the school to Depot Square, before returning to the grounds for Spirit Day activities at noon.

After the older students’ walkathon, prekindergarten and kindergarten classes will have one of their own, around the school grounds.

At 1 p.m., Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond will visit the walkers to accept a gift from the school for his support. Westchester County Legislator Sheila Marcotte has also been invited.

Residents have seen steady progress made to the 9,500-square-foot gymnasium since construction began in earnest July 1. The foundation has been poured, and several reinforcement bars have been put in place. More than 20 pallets of cinder blocks have been dropped off at the construction site as the building slowly expands upward. The gym is expected to be finished in March.

Peter Gisolfi Associates designed the building, and Howard Dym is the lead contractor.

“The building is going to be spacious and will be particularly good for the parish,” Gisolfi said. “This will give them another assembly space. It won’t just be used for sports. It’s going to be used by the whole community.”
