TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – Tuckahoe elementary school students were transported to a different world to learn the basics of the Italian language from an unlikely source: a magical fairy.
Education at the William E. Cottle Elementary School became magical when students rushed to the Italian Club Amici after school to see La Fata Italiana, “the Italian Fairy.”
During the hour-long lesson, the fairy taught students four “spells.” These spells consisted of basic, but catchy music, lyrics and dance moves that correlated to four categories of the Italian language, including numbers, colors, home wares and things seen in the sky.
Children were treated to both a live fairy, and a music video featuring a digital fairy that was playing in the background, demonstrating the proper technique to the students. The movements were designed to help memorize the words, while letting children be active.
The event was put on by Simona Rodano, who played La Fata Italiana. She is a musician, performer and award-winning educator who teaches children about Italian culture and language. She is the founder of Incanto Productions, which puts on live performances and produces CDs and DVDs.
