Sommer met with students to discuss his experiences, from his youth in Czechoslovakia, through his escape from a Nazi labor camp, to immigrating to the U.S. and being honored as National Teacher of the Year in 1981.

The students have recently finished reading “The Boy in the Striped Pajamas” by John Boyne, a fictional tale about the friendship between the son of a Nazi commandant and a Jewish concentration camp inmate. In addition, the eighth-grade social studies classes are currently studying World War II.
