TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – After a power outage and snowstorm forced classes to be cancelled in Tuckahoe, the district has announced that schools will be open March 25, which was to be the first day of spring recess.

Superintendent Edward Reilly met with the Teachers’ and Administrators’ Associations to decide what changes needed to be made to the district calendar after the Feb. 27 power outage and March 8 snowstorm.

The district announced earlier this month that Superintendent’s Conference Day, a scheduled day off for students on April 29, would be a full instructional day.

David Stark, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said more inclement weather is possible. Historically, snow has fallen in the region through March.

“The likelihood becomes less as we head into the end of the month,” he said.

Due to the impact of Hurricane Sandy, schools were closed for a full week in the fall, which forced the district to alter the calendar and hold classes during winter recess.

“We clearly understand the inconvenience associated with yet another change to our school calendar,” Reilly said. “Reinstating these days is necessary to ensure that our district does not lose state aid.”
