TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – The Tuckahoe School District has started its budget process for the 2013-2014 school year and is seeking input from parents.

The process began on Monday, with a budget discussion at the Board of Education meeting between members and parents. There will be additional budget workshops that have yet to be determined by the district.

Superintendent Edward Reilly has identified several areas that may potentially be cut in order to bridge the deficit the district currently faces if it were to maintain all programs and services that exist this year.

Reilly has proposed adding a school psychologist at Cottle Elementary School and a teacher aide for students with special needs. He also plans on purchasing Stanford Achievement Tests, which would be a part of the district’s local assessment.

It was also suggested that the district eliminate BOCES Occupational Education, reducing retirement incentive and district-wide computer equipment, among other things. If BOCES were eliminated, it would affect a total of eight students, but would save more than $150,000.

Bus transportation would no longer be available to students in Bronxville Manor and transportation would be eliminated for parentally placed students attending private school more than seven miles outside the district. In the proposed budget, the district would save nearly $850,000.

The Board of Education will adopt the budget on April 23, and there will be a public hearing on May 13. The budget will be voted on May 21 at the Board of Education meeting.
