Tuckahoe School District To Shorten Winter Recess

TUCKAHOE, N.Y. – The Tuckahoe school district will reduce its winter recess in February to atone for the week of classes that were missed when Hurricane Sandy hit the East Coast.

After discussing the issue with the district’s teachers and administrators associations, Superintendent Edward J. Reilly announced that there will be instructional school days Feb. 19 through 21.

If Mother Nature forces more schools closings before then, the district has a contingency plan to make up for the missed classes. The first planned emergency day would be Feb. 22, followed by March 27, 25 and 28.

“We understand the inconvenience associated with changing plans and rearranging schedules, but, clearly, these are extraordinary circumstances,” Reilly wrote to parents.

Reilly said state officials are working with transportation companies to help parents and families that may have already made travel plans for the winter break.

“We cannot risk the loss of state aid associated with too few school days,” he said. “Our state representatives are presently working with airlines and other travel providers to waive penalties associated with canceling reservations.”
