Students were asked to create videos demonstrating their schools’ need for a defibrillator as well as where the device would be placed and how to generate awareness for the device’s importance.

“Sudden cardiac arrest is the leading cause of death on school property,” says Michele Snyder, executive director of Parent Heart Watch. “In addition to advocating for heart screenings with an electrocardiogram, PHW wants to ensure that each and every school in the U.S. is equipped with a potentially lifesaving AED.”

The contest was part of the Heart Avengers AED 2014 Grant Program, which is designed to give schools in the United States the opportunity to receive a defibrillator package for use on school grounds, on school buses or during sporting events.

The competition was open to students in grades kindergarten through 12, and nine schools across the United States have each been awarded a Heart Sine automated external defibrillator.

Parent Heart Watch is a national organization dedicated to protecting youths from sudden cardiac arrest and preventable sudden cardiac death.

Some of the winning videos can be viewed on the HeartSine YouTube channel.
