EASTCHESTER, N.Y. -- The little league all-star season opened with the Eastchester Majors' softball team winning the District 20 title and that was just the beginning.
Not to be outdone by their counterparts, the boys won the District 20 Majors baseball championship.
The baseball team advanced to the Section 4 final and the softball team came within a game of playing for the Section 4 softball championship.
The two Majors' teams highlighted an outstanding summer for the Eastchester Little League all-star teams. Along with the Majors' teams, the 9-10-year-old softball team reached the District 20 final, one year after winning the title. The 11-year-olds baseball team was a win away from playing Harrison for the championship and the 9-10-year-olds baseball team went 2-2.
Overall, the five Eastchester all-star teams went 15-7 during District 20 play and 19-11 overall, including Section 4 Tournament games.
This shows that Eastchester is a very good little league and we have good coaches, said 13-year-old Sophia Tiso, a starter on the district-winning majors softball team.
John Doherty, Tisos friend and eighth-grade classmate at Eastchester Middle School, agrees.
We have talented players in Eastchester and we all did a great job this summer, Doherty said.
There was great camaraderie among the teams, especially the Majors' groups. Tiso and her teammates, especially Daniella Speedy Chiodi, were huge fans at the baseball games as were members of the 11-year-old baseball team. Tiso, Chiodi and their teammates had their own following -- The Bleacher Guys -- who were at all of their District 20 games.
Were all friends and we wanted to watch each other play when we could, Doherty said. It was a great feeling knowing that you had your friends and family cheering you on in the stands.
After the girls won their district title, they made sure they were vocal at every majors baseball game.
Most of the boys on the team are our friends so we went to cheer them on so they could have the same experience as us, Tiso said.
Once the girls won, they was some good-natured ribbing between the friends.
We kept telling them because they won, they had no excuses, Tiso said.
The boys would not be upstaged by the girls. When they won, they enjoyed it and shared it with the girls.
They were all there for us so all of the players were happy that both teams won and both teams had a great summer, Doherty said.
