Eastchester Crowned District 20 Softball Champion

ARDSLEY, N.Y. -- Tori Santomauro drove in the winning run and tagged out a runner at the plate for the final out Thursday as Eastchester’s nine-ten-year-old softball team topped Harrison 5-4 to capture the District 20 championship at McDowell Field.

Right-hander Olivia Yorizzo started and went all six innings to earn the victory for Eastchester, which will next play in the New York State Sectional playoffs Tuesday in upstate Walkill. Harrison, with one loss in the double-elimination tournament, needed a victory to force another game with Eastchester, which went undefeated in the tournament.

“I get nervous sometimes at the beginning of the game and when it’s close,” Yorizzo said. “I just wanted to get the last three outs." Eastchester scored three quick runs in the first inning with Santomauro driving in a run and Brid O’Connell driving in two. Eva Reda made it 4-0 with an RBI single in the third.

Harrison then responded, scoring twice in the fourth inning. Kelsey Ciafone drove in the second run to cut the Eastchester lead to 3-2. Nicole Calabro drove home Carson DeLasho to make the score 4-2 in the fifth, and Santomauro followed with a base hit to give Eastchester a 5-2 lead. Harrison came back with two runs in the fifth to draw within 5-4 and had the tying run in scoring position in the sixth inning. Harrison first baseman Nicole Calabro threw to Santomauro, who tagged the Harrison runner trying to score to end the game.

“I just got the tag down in time,” Santomauro said. “They came back but we held on. If we win or lose now, we know we are the District champs.”
