Eastchester Football Hosts Somers In Final Game

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Eastchester High School football team will host Somers on Saturday for a league game at 2:45 p.m., as the Tuskers try to position themselves better for the postseason and earn head coach Tony Dematteo his 299th career victory.

The Tuskers are 6-0 this season and are second in the Class A League 2 Piner standings, which Section 1 uses to determine playoff teams and seeding. Somers has 3.13 points and trails only Brewster, which is also undefeated and has 3.6 points.

Eastchester is fresh off its first win of the season, a 32-21 victory at Pelham. Senior running back Greg DiCarlo rushed 18 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns in that game.

The Eagles have averaged 18.3 points per game this season but have allowed 30.83 points per game. Eastchester may have a difficult time slowing down Somers’ powerful offense on Saturday.

Somers’ most recent win was a dominating 41-14 performance against a strong Walter Panas team on Senior Night. The Tuskers have simply manhandled opponents on both sides of the ball for the majority of the season and are undefeated as a result.

Somers has averaged 34.3 points per game, while allowing just 11.5 points per game. In fact, the highest point total any opponent has posted against Somers this season is 22 by Ossining in week five.

Still, the Tuskers must be careful to avoid an upset. They will more than likely be in the playoffs but can leapfrog Brewster for the top spot in the league with a win and some help.

Dematteo said after the game against Ossining that, even after 43 years of coaching, he still does not know how to prevent an upset. The best approach, he said, is to just prepare the players as best he can and hope they take care of business on the field.

The Tuskers must do exactly that on Saturday.
