Eastchester Storms Back Then Falls in District 20

VALHALLA, N.Y. -- Kensico pulled out a hard-fought 7-4 extra-inning victory over Eastchester Thursday in a District 20 Major League softball game at Pat Henry Park.

Kensico’s win forced a second meeting with Eastchester Friday to decide the championship. Eastchester had not lost a game in the double-elimination tournament, while Kensico had suffered one loss prior to the semifinal meeting. Down 4-0 early, Eastchester came alive to tie the score at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth and final inning of regulation play.

Sheri Weingarten drove in a run to make the score 4-2 and teammate Madison Boutureira stroked a two-run single to tie the game at 4-4. Not shaken by the loss of its lead, Kensico used a walk, two errors and a hit to score three runs in the top of the seventh. Kaylie Dymek and Maggie Croke reached base. Isabella Raguzzi’s infield ground ball was misplayed, scoring what turned out to be the winning run. Alyssa Dolan and Sophia Rizzuto each drove in a run to make it 7-4.

Dolan, a right-hander, went 4 1/3 innings and was relieved by Dymek for the next two. Dolan was then reinserted for the final inning and earned the save.

“We needed a change so Kaylie (a lefthander) came in,” Dolan said. “She has to pitch Friday, so I came in the relieve her. It’s teamwork.”

Kensico third baseman Alyssa Giordano made a great stab of a hard line drive headed straight at her head in the bottom of the seventh to help close out the game.

“I just reacted and it was in my glove,” Giordano said. “We just want to play well Friday – win or lose – give it our best.”
