ESPN Names Westlake's Hopkins As Top Recruit

THORNWOOD, N.Y. – Westlake’s very own football star Tommy Hopkins is much more than just the big man on campus. Hopkins was recently named the 17th best high school football recruit in the state of New York for the class of 2013 by ESPN.

Hopkins, a 6-foot-6 offensive tackle weighing 285 pounds, is set to enter his senior year at Westlake High School, where he was a starter the past two seasons. The rankings were released by recruiting analysts as part of ESPN’s Recruiting Nation. Hopkins was the only player from Westchester County to be featured on the list.

Although he is recognized as a top recruit, the Hawthorne native’s recruiting is over. In early May, Hopkins orally committed to play football next year at the University of Connecticut. It was the first Division I scholarship offer that Hopkins received. In an interview shortly after his decision, Hopkins said that a combination of UConn’s success on the football field along with its facilities drew him to the school. Hopkins can’t officially commit to UConn until national signing day in February. Other schools interested in Hopkins were Penn State, Boston College and Virginia.

Hopkins was unavailable for comment Wednesday.

The Westlake Wildcats football team opens its season Sept. 7 when it travels to Poughkeepsie to play Our Lady of Lourdes High School. The game is scheduled for 7 p.m.
