Lake Isle Club Swims In Fight Against Cancer

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Lake Isle Club swimmers of all ages will hit the pool Saturday in the latest fundraising event for Swim Across America-Long Island Sound's fight against cancer, now in its 20th year.

The event is one of several local pool swims where volunteers and teams of swimmers do laps to raise funding for local cancer support, research and other related work. Last year's Lake Isle Swim drew 60 swimmers and raised more than $30,000.

Renee Tucker, who organized the Lake Isle event last year, said donations had grown significantly.

“The first year here we raised $5,000 and (last) year we are up to about $32,000.” Tucker said. “The kids were really enthusiastic."

Natalia Benejam, who swam as a 10-year-old last year, set her sights high to help others.

“I did it because I wanted to see if I could swim a mile, and I did it,” Benejam said. “But this is because we raised money to help people.”

Proceeds from local swim events go to several organizations, including Cancer Support Team of Westchester County, Tommy Palazzo Fellowship at Columbia University, Morgan Stanley Children’s Hospital of New York-Presbyterian Medical Center, DeMatteo Research and Swim Across America’s laboratories at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.
