Lamberti birdied the second sudden death playoff hole to claim top honors over Anthony Aruta at the annual event, which is named after baseball great Babe Ruth, an avid golfer who called Leewood his home course.
The Bambino Golf Tournament started as an invitational tournament for golf professionals, but this year organizers decided to invite some of the area’s top amateur golfers.
The field didn’t break par, with Lamberti and Aruta each shooting one over on the par 70 course. Shaun Powers and John Stoltz were each one shot back of the leaders and James Ondo and Phil Rusnack each shot a 73 to tie for fifth.
Ruth was a regular at Leewood Golf Club during his time with the New York Yankees. Legend has it that the tunnel connecting Leewood Drive and the Bronx River Parkway was built so he could make a quick escape from the course to get down to Yankee Stadium for games. At his display at the Baseball Hall of Fame, there is a trophy from a tournament he won at Leewood.
