RYE, N.Y. — Ryan Maierle won his heat in the 10-and-under 50-yard breaststroke Monday, earning the top seed in the final. In the final, he did even better.

Maierle, swimming for Lake Isle Country Club, beat his heat time, covering the 50 yards in 33.90 seconds to win the final at Playland Pool.

It was a step forward for Maierle, 10, who said he didn’t qualify for the finals last year in this event. Maierle joined the Wolverines in an effort to improve, and he has in a span of one year.

“I felt that it was good,” Maierle, a sixth-grader-to-be at Eastchester Middle school, said of his heat time. “I was seeded first, and I wanted to be seeded first going into the final.”

Maierle earned the top seed with a time of 34.27 seconds, one second faster that second-seeded Liam Loveless, who finished second in the final.

Midway through the race, Maierle kicked it into high gear.

“I knew I was going to have to spring from the start to the finish,” he said. “I felt good about my swim halfway through. Once I started to pull ahead, I wanted to keep it that way."
