Purchase Invitational Cross Country Meet Grows

PURCHASE, N.Y. – A sunny day helped to dry the trail for the fourth running of the Purchase College Cross Country Invitational, which drew a record number of competitors Saturday with 11 teams running the course.

Hunter College’s Elizabeth Mahoney (24:47.34) and Dowling’s Scott Litts (29:16.1) won the respective individual men's and women’s races. The United States Merchant Marine Academy won the men's team race followed by Dowling and Hunter colleges. USMMA’s David McGowan finished second (30:09.9) overall. Hunter’s Jose Miranda (30:21.8), Dowling’s Rickey Gallegos (30:36.8) and Purchase’s Jake Agosto (Jr./Bayshore, N.Y.) (30:40.2) rounded out the top five.

Purchase finished fourth on the women’s side and sixth overall on the men’s side, registering its first men's team score of the fall after not competing with enough runners at the Vassar Invitational.

Fresh off her Skyline Conference Honor Roll, standout newcomer Laurel Squadron (Fr./Landenberg, Pa.) once again paced the Panthers, finishing 14th overall. She completed the 5K in 23:30.7. Colleen Walker (Sr./Mastic, NY) finished 17th and second overall for Purchase. Walker posted a time of 23:52.7.

In the 8K, the Panthers were led by Agosto, who was named Skyline Conference Cross Country Runner of the Week earlier in the week. Julian Norton (Sr./Loudonville, N.Y.) followed Agosto, finishing 19th for the Panthers in new head coach Christian Fuller’s (Tuckahoe) home debut.

The Purchase cross-country teams return to action Saturday at Bard College.
