Torres Continues Record-Setting Swimming Run

RYE, N.Y. – One night after Nick Torres set an individual record and was part of a relay record, the 10-year-old swimmer from Lake Isle Country Club added his name to the record book once again.

Torres won the boys 10-and-under 50-yard backstroke in a record 31.27 seconds Wednesday at the 87th annual Westchester County Swimming Association “Counties” Championships at Playland Amusement Park.

Earlier in the night, Torres teamed with Luca Quinones, Chris Torres and Ryan Maierle to win the 10-and-under 200-yard freestyle relay in a time of 2:01.26. They missed the record – 2:01.22 set in 2010 – by the slimmest of margins. This quartet had broken the medley relay record on Tuesday.

Not to be outperformed by their younger teammates, the boys 17-and-under foursome of Declan Kennon, Rory Kennon, Brian Martinez and Sora Shiraishi won the 200 freestyle relay.

Torres, 10, a sixth-grader-to-be at Eastchester Middle School, erased the longstanding record of Marc Lener, who went 31.54 seconds in 1988.

Following his time in his preliminary heat, 31.60 seconds, Torres said he knew he would have to do better in the final. He swam alongside Maierle, who finished second in the final with a time of 32.52 seconds.

“I didn’t feel that I did that good,” Torres said. “I felt like I was swimming a little slow. When I heard I got the record, I was surprised.

“It feels pretty good to win, because it wasn’t that easy, because there were so many fast swimmers in the race.”
