EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – The Tuckahoe High School football team played winless Haldane to a 27-27 tie Saturday after a dominant performance against defending state champion Dobbs Ferry the previous week.
Tuckahoe was riding high on the strength of its defense after it avenged last season’s 40-0 blowout against Dobbs Ferry. But after four overtime periods, the Tigers and the Blue Devils could not determine a winner.
Now, Tuckahoe will host a 3-2 Bronxville team that is 2-0 on the road this season. The two rivals will square off Saturday at 6:30 p.m.
Tuckahoe had shut out two opponents and given up just 21 total points in its other two games before surrendering a season-high 27 points against Haldane. The Broncos will test the Tigers’ defense, as Bronxville has averaged 26.6 points per game this season.
Still, the Tigers have shown plenty of reasons to expect a bounce back game this week. The defense has been stellar all season with the exception of one game. The Tigers’ ground game continued to show strength last week as Shyheim Nixon rushed 11 times for 196 yards and one touchdown.
Nixon did not play in overtime because of an injury, but fellow senior Nick Reisman is more than capable of carrying the load for the Tigers.
Bronxville is coming off two straight wins, a 20-14 victory against Haldane in week four and a 31-14 win against Pawling last week. The Broncos have also played very well in both road games this season as they earned a 43-0 shutout at Hastings in week two and the aforementioned win at Haldane.
The geography of the game will also add to the intensity as the schools, separated by less than two miles, have created a local rivalry. Bronxville soundly beat Tuckahoe, 33-12, in their meeting last season.
Saturday’s game should be an intense battle between two local rivals as both teams need the win for different reasons. Tuckahoe is trying to cement itself as a playoff contender, while Bronxville is jockeying for position in the Class C standings.
