DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. -- Fullback Tim Soave scored three times and quarterback Spencer Avalos had two long touchdown runs, but it was lineman Brian Gardner and the Dobbs Ferry defense that stifled the potent Tuckahoe offense Friday as the host Eagles romped to a 40-0 victory at Gould Park.
We work hard in practice and work out to be stronger and it shows in the games, said Gardner, an undersized 5-5, 160-pound nose tackle who was in the Tuckahoe backfield all night. Our defense is strong right now the line, defensive backs, everyone is working together.
Dobbs Ferry (3-1), which has held opponents to three points in its last three wins, lost its only game to Class C state champion Bronxville on opening day.
Tuckahoe (2-2) shut out its first two opponents of the season before suffering a 33-12 loss to Bronxville last week and looking lifeless in the loss to the Eagles.
While Gardner and the defense was working hard, Avalos led the offense up and down the field, scoring on a 45-yard punt return himself and sprinting 62 yards for a score as the Eagles built a 34-0 halftime lead. Soave scored twice in the first half and added another touchdown to close out the scoring.
Were executing very well now, Soave said. We just needed to get through a couple of game to start rolling. The offense is sharper and the defense has been good all year.
Avalos, who said the Bronxville loss motivated the Eagles to be in better condition after several players cramped in the hot and humid opening day conditions leading to a late 15-14 loss, noted his teams improved strength.
It (football) always starts with being in shape, all the patents egging us on to drink water and eat bananas and good food, Avalos said. I think were in good condition now and we can come out strong play our best football on offense and defense.
First-year Dobbs Ferry head coach Tim Moran said the teams defense has been a key to success all season.
I cant say its a matter of progressing, because our defense has been strong all along, said Moran. Our defensive coordinator Josh Tobacco (a Dobbs Ferry alum) has done a great job. All his schemes have been right on.
Dobbs Ferry hosts Pawling Thursday at 4:30 p.m. for a try at its fourth straight victory.
Tuckahoe hosts Kennedy Catholic of Somers Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
