The sixth-seeded Falcons, who joined the Woodland girls team that won its first Section 1 title earlier Saturday, will play the Section 9 representative in a March 4 state regional playoff at Mount St. Mary in upstate in Newburgh.
Johnson, who finished with 13 points, hit four 3-pointers in the second half after Putnam Valley had taken a 34-21 lead midway through the third quarter.
"I wasn't getting too many shots in the first half," said Johnson, who was oddly quiet after the win. "I had the chance to shoot and I knew that run (12-0) was important. It changed the game. We also played better defense in the second half. I'm excited that the girls won too."
The Falcons ran off 12 straight points to take the lead at 35-34 and extended to a 51-45 lead before Putnam Valley drew to within 52-50.
Jamil Gambari scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half for Woodlands but the Falcons trailed 23-21 at the half. Gambari, who was named the tournament's Most Valuable Player added 12 rebounds.
Pierre Lys and Abdoulaye Sow made 8 of 14 free throws in the final three minutes between them to help the Falcons hold onto the lead.Woodlands made 11 of 20 free throws in the last quarter.
The Woodlands boys won their first title since 2010.
