Unfortunately, walking in WP is dangerous. Without enforcement and I mean, police giving people tickets on the St & by police who themselves obey the laws will the "peds" be safe. Most of the city doesn't have sidewalks; where there are they are in bad shape. Many stop lines & even crosswalk lines need to be redone. Bikers disobey the laws 99.9% of time; riding on sidewalks, going through red lights & never signaling! The bike lanes are a joke especially the area that puts bikers in the center of St. The fines for biking on sidewalks is up to $10;unless the bike is taken away the biker will just keep doing the wrong thing. Bikers on RT22 go in packs taking up whole lanes & go through every red light. There are illegal electric bikes: 2 wheeled scooters going on sidewalks. Children do not wear helmets. Bikes should be registered like with dogs. Many who ride do not have ID. Curb cuts are at steep angles in many places & people waiting for buses on Main St & Martine block the sidewalks in many places. The cars leaving driveways & malls do not stop for peds! The city's bikers giving parking tickets also disobey the law by riding on sidewalks, going the wrong way & not stopping when it says "no turn on red." I have to swing a bag as I cross streets to get cars to stop. I have been honked at; almost run over & this is when I cross legally. People crossing illegally do so because the wait time for crossing is very long; then the turning cars don't let you cross. Cars go too fast. Cars & trucks park in crosswalks & on the sidewalk making it hard to cross. The signal buttons do not state when they are automatic & are usually 6 to 8 feet from a crossing area. Some don't work & snow is left in crosswalk and around the poles with buttons. After hitting the signal button, one has to wait for the light cycle (60to90secs or more) to complete. Crosswalk signal from Tibbits Park across S. Broadway at top of Armory place does not work! I've had to take pics of these illegal drivers including bikers. Many people on sidewalks block the whole sidewalk in places &people walking with friends do so all the way across the sidewalk, not letting others go by. People do not care and because I walk slowly and have a bad knee, no one gives me a break. I have written to 3 Mayors (and some council people) including the present one, & nothing is done. The construction area on Main St where one has to go into the street is very dangerous. I have had to call the city numerous times about this. It has been over 2 yrs since the construction started and should never been allowed. The police do not care and even those at construction sites do not help peds cross safely. The money these police counts as overtime and is counted toward their retirement so in the end, the tax payer is paying for this. These policemen tell me they are not on duty and can't tell bikers to stop biking on sidewalks and through the crosswalk. View Comment

I have found this construction area to be a terrible mess. The pedestrian walking area is very dangerous and I have had to complain to the city numerous times about it. I think the old A&P should have been converted to a parking lot a long time ago. There are plenty of empty buildings around the city where the hotel could have been put without causing all the traffic problems. I really doubt they will finish on time and it is now going on two years. View Comment

The problem of sidewalks especially with heavy snow fall, is that the city piles the corners with more snow than the rest of the street (intersection of two different plowing directions). The sidewalk might be done but then there is the area between the sidewalk and the cleared road that becomes a problem. This area is not always shoveled and even after it is done once, the city makes things worse by plowing more snow into these small cut out areas. These areas fill with water making the going from sidewalk to the clear street difficult. The bus stops were not done and even yesterday they only made a small path through the mounds. The parking meters are also difficult to get to because of the mounds of snow and cars have been parking into the streets more because of the mounds. How is a person using a wheel chair supposed to get through? The pedestrian is usually an after thought and the city doesn't even do their own property well. The municipal lot on Hamilton entrance is blocked on sidewalk in the center area and the plow guy doing Tibbits Park along Westchester Ave. near Franklin did the apartment sidewalks but not the sidewalk that serves as a ramp for people unable to use the stairs. I wish more people would complain to the city by the e-mail to city hall or by phoning the public works office. Sometimes they listen to me but if more people complained to the city, more would get done. View Comment

I think it is the sign of the times and many offices are closed on weekends so it makes sense. I know it hurts but they should increase the fees by increments of 5 and not by cents. . View Comment

The Westchester Mall opened in 1995. The B Altman Dept store moved from the corner of E Post Rd and Mamaroneck to a building where Nordstrom is today back in 1950. In the Mall one can find information about the rail line next to the Mall's office off the Food Court. The Greenway is a trail created on part of the old rails bed. Information about the rail line can be found where the trail crosses Ridgeway near the school. Other parts of the rail bed are still visible from streets north and south of Gedney Way. There is a tunnel that goes under Bryant Ave which one can view from the Municipal Lot on Mamaroneck Ave. near the Bloomingdale Rd intersection. The former rail bed has buildings on it along Bloomingdale Rd between the Mamaroneck and Maple Ave intersections. There is a fountain from the original B. Altman's of NYC (closed when company went under) in the Mall at the lowest level to the parking garage where the escalators go below outside of Nordstrom's near the the Concierge Desk. When they were doing construction below Neiman Marcus a while back they found tunnels which might have been from the rail line. I am writing a book about the remnants of history in White Plains that predate 1940 if you want more information. I have done a lot of research on the city and have photographs. I hope to give a copy of my work to the library in the near future. View Comment

I just hope all these people getting together at bars, houses and other places get home safely and the drivers stay away from the things that contain alcohol. View Comment

One has to be careful everywhere especially when carrying these expensive devices. There are thieves everywhere and people think they are safe from crime. It is a shame but that is life. View Comment

Hope they fix walking area but I wish would use a more ecological surface that looks better than the cement. I would get rid of the log ride which is right by the water and put in a more attractive park area. I used to enjoy walking along the water especially in the off seasons but have not been back to see how bad it is. Seen some pics. View Comment

WOW! But these robberies could have happened with out the posting. At least they did not get the gun. This is just one way guns get out on the streets. Why did the owner have the gun if it was locked up. It kind of defeats the purpose of having a gun but I am glad they did have it locked up. Guns, knives, and even baseball bats are all dangerous. People need to stop the violence in their own homes if they expect the rest of the world not to break the law! View Comment

The names of the police were put up by the Journal when they listed their salaries. The info is still available. I would assume all police have permits to carry fire arms so the names were already out there. Most people can find out addresses on the internet. The police are always at risk and so are their families when there are guns around. What about the people on this map who aren't police officers? We should assume everyone is capable of violence and could be carrying a gun. Two police officers got shot by a man who they went after for going from car to car on the subway. They should have been better prepared. All cops should wear protective clothing. Knowing the name of the person having a permit in my building was a shock but these are only the weapons that are legal and do not cover all firearms. Guns are only part of the problem. People can kill with their bare hands, a rock, a knife or even a baseball bat. Be safe by staying aware of your surroundings at all times. I was a teacher for over 30 yrs and kids brought weapons to school (including guns) and I was in the office when one of my students tried to shoot an administrator. Don't be an ostrich with its head in a hole in the ground! View Comment

I can't believe they got anyone for these robberies from the New Haven Line stops. He ripped off a lot of people but going through the Justice System is unfortunately a problem when it comes to a conviction. Our Justice System does not work he could get away with this. He knows what buttons to push and is playing games with the lawyers who have been assigned to him. It is hard being a public defender and they aren't paid enough as it is. This person could have said something worse. I worked with teens like this and one told my school that I slapped her when I was breaking up a fight the girl was involved it. It is a way of diffusing a situation and taking the blame off oneself (a con). People lie as if it is nothing and unfortunately innocent people have been hurt as a result. I was lucky that the administration did not believe the girl after talking to me and I had a Union Rep with me for my own protection when I was questioned. It just didn't make sense that I would slap the girl but I could have hit her while pulling her off the other girl she was on top of. The administration should have interviewed me after the incident but waited till after a weekend to interview me. I did not want to get involved except to report the fight but my students who were developmentally disabled had asked me to help them because the fight was in the hall by their classroom and were scared to go by. I was at lunch in a room nearby. When it comes to a trial or even a plea bargain, it is the lawyer who has the better argument who usually wins the case. It is not about actually who did it and has been this way for a long time. View Comment

Good intentions by one industry ends up contributing to more crime. What a pity. Advice is good to know. There are vacant apartments in my building and one has things delivered to it and it is still sitting in hallway. The smoke detectors batteries have also lost all their juice. Vacant homes are often a big risk. Look at the homes where Hurricane Sandy hit. These residents have been worried for good reason. In WP vacant buildings and stores often deteriorate with neglect on the part of landowners becoming dangerous places to even walk by. These buildings are easy to spot and can be "stripped" as well. Look what homeowners who lose their homes to Banks often do to the structures before they are evicted. I heard once cement was put down a toilet. The high end sellers could hire house sitters to keep their homes in good condition and to prevent theft. View Comment
