Heard Lilli Pilli is owned by Capelli's wife. Not thrilled with menu. Too many bar/restaurants in area & competition is killing even good businesses. Rents are too high. Mamaroneck Area/Post Rd corridor is ugly and filthy. Sidewalks/roads need to be redone, not just patched. Parking fees are a big turn off. People don't want to walk even a block to get to entrance especially when everything is unattractive. Areas where plantings are or used to be need to be redesigned, maintained; cleaned up. Either plant trees in empty areas or get rid off them. Planters are empty most of the year and are ugly during colder months. A planter next to a planting section is taking up sidewalk walking space. Brick on sidewalks, often come loose or are gone. Begging, illegal selling, bottle people with store shopping carts & Jehovah Witnesses people don't attract new people to area. Rents are too high and many empty stores in this area. Bricks in street where this restaurant is doesn't help and they need to clean the black step up area along Post Rd that is dirty. Webster Bank has dead plant in entrance way across the street. Dog owners not curbing dogs along Waller Ave in grass along sidewalk is a turn off. Construction has also been a turn off especially on Main Street, Waller and around hospital. Tall buildings bring wind and make it difficult to walk. Park on Main St next to Grace Church hasn't been completed and with Renaissance Plaza Fountain the city is turning all but the homeless away. City not fixing things like traffic light by Macy's is a problem. Traffic lights are too long for pedestrians so many just cross in front of on going cars or in middle of roads. Cars don't let pedestrians cross first. Lines for crosswalks, stop lines and lanes fading away. Fix the little things so people will walk down the streets giving the opened stores business.
I got stuck in this traffic that was backed up to White Plains. I had to get off at exit 5. I wish there had been those flashing signs to tell me what was the problem. I was on the road around 1pm. Horrible, horrible! View Comment
I would put some kind of monitoring system on the child because this can happen again. If you ever read the book by John Kellerman called "Rage" you will know why. Watching and keeping track of a child with special needs is a challenge but is very important. This is also wise for anyone who is caring for an elderly person who needs special care. With today's technology I would use it cause too many people have not had such a happy ending.
City should enforce its others laws that have to do with air quality if they think someone will enforce this one. How about telling the buses/ cars that leave their engines going when standing? I have seen some police cars doing it this summer as well. They should enforce the use of gas leaf blowers by all the big businesses, City Center and county's properties. This adds to the air problem especially if one is walking by. Unless there is enforcement, there is no use to another law! View Comment
Great comments and I think FASNY would be a great fit to the area if they do what they propose. These property owners have the same say as the rest of the citizens in the city. We all get one vote and getting nasty to those who don't agree is just "undemocratic." In my area, traffic is horrible and I live up the street from Eastview. When I moved into Franklin there was no Stop & Shop, The Westchester or the City Center. Who said no to these and the other big construction areas. We now have a really bad wind problem with the tall buildings. Streets have been closed and others have been created all through WP's history. I have little sympathy for people when they talk about traffic and someone who is going to take an extra minute and a half to get around FASNY I am sure when they shop in my area, they don't stop for peds, but litter and speed. For the FASY site, I would like to see permeable walkways/bike paths and a gated entrance during the schools busiest hours to only allow staff and buses in. This would be the only way to enforce busing. By the way, the whole area including where the houses and other structures are all in the Mamaroneck River watershed that is about 17.5 sq miles. Large sections of the Mamaroneck River is underground along with the other wetland areas that used to be in the city. I did a lot of research about the city and had a hard time finding the remnants of our wetlands due to all the development in the city. Much of the developments on the east and west side of Mamaroneck Ave and then Bloomingdale Rd have parts of the West branch of the river as well as unnamed streams and ponds. The Cassaway/Causeway goes from Burke to NY Hospital grounds as well as to the street across but much of this area is developed. There is not much left of an area where lots of streams once flowed. The more one develops the more flooding will occur when it rains heavily. This is when the watershed resurfaces. All the people living in Gedney Farms are in the wetland area but I don't know of any houses or roads sinking. Many of the homes have basements especially the older ones cause environmental concerns were not thought of when White Plains was being developed. I wrote a book about the city and have a section about the wetlands. Did you know that a stream ran through the Highlands and a pond was where the WP Hospital is today? Davis Ave gets its name from the brook that now runs under the streets and only comes up at the intersection with the Bronx River. White Plains has to go through the process with every developer and it has been going on for yrs now. I am sure the school will eventually get approved but they are not asking for a zone change. A permit I believe has to be abided by or it can be later denied. If it was a city park, these people should see how poorly the city maintains their parks. These people against the project should have bought the land and develop it as they saw fit. Instead of buying signs that litter the area making it look horrible, they should have bought out the property. View Comment
White Plains does not depend on property taxes but sales taxes to pay for amenities. Many streets in the city closed for development and others became one way. Other roadways were created. People should do their homework! I am certain this school will eventually open or their will be a law suit. I would like to see a gate put in at entrance that only allows buses and employees to enter at peak times. I would like to see the parking to go underground below the structures. There would be less snow plowing on the property and no unattractive parking lots. Or they could do lots like the County Center did with ponds and trees.
How horrible but traveling can be dangerous. I will not be going to Mexico but someone did use my credit card down there for me. What an ordeal for the family! I guess taking a direct flight would have been a better way to go to the World Cup but I don't think I will ever go to Brazil either. I travel alone and many places are just too dangerous. I read a lot of novels and it took me years before I went to New Orleans because of one. This was a long time ago but being the "murder" capital in the US really got me. I read the US gov advice on traveling to places and delayed a return trip to Paris because of riots when I first went there for one day in 2004. I returned to Paris in 2013 and I found the city unsafe for a number of reasons. I did not go out at night and left all my most valuable things in the hotel safe. I was constantly being approached by people trying to rob me. Be safe when you travel. Don't assume that anywhere is safe. It is when you let your guard down, that you can be victimized. View Comment
Landscapers are banned during the summer from using gas blowers but they use them all the time. The noise is a problem but so are the fumes. Buses idling on Hamilton Ave near N. Broadway should shut their engines when not moving. View Comment
At least Cuomo didn't use his family in the commercials like did NJ Governor. Money should go to areas suffering major loses like Playland. Obviously, Astorino really wants to be Gov. Who will take his place in Westchester? View Comment
Ithaca has a college crowd but when a place is ranked as exciting cause it has "fast food" restaurants I have to laugh and laugh. If this gets one excited then wow! If people in these many upstate places were so excited, than why aren't they doing so well! The article was worth a laugh! View Comment
I don't understand your comment. Perks are the benefits that one gets by being on a board or even a worker of some company, or even the fire department (like a better parking spot, or something fixed that they want fixed). These are not monetary so I don't understand the unearned income on a tax return. As for cheating on taxes, I believe most of us do it in one form or another. For example: In NY one has to pay extra for sales tax on things or services bought outside their own municipality. Most people just list it as "0" because it is 1.Very difficult to actually figure out what one owes, 2. It is doubtful that the state will come looking for the unpaid money cause it would not be worth their bother and 3. most people don't know they have to pay this cause they use an accountant who says to just put zero down. Do you only buy things in Chappaqua where the sales tax is lower and pay the added amount? I doubt it! I do return bottles to get the deposit back on ones that I actually didn't pay deposits on so I guess if you are applying that I cheat, I will admit that But really, that was my whole point, everyone cheats but if you are a politician it often comes out when someone wants to make a political point. Do you have the required smoke detectors in your home? I am sure most people don't and unfortunately people get burned! View Comment
I would not recommend "jail time," cause they would move on to bigger criminal activity by learning more tricks from hardened criminals. And, most likely they would just get community service if their case went to court. Our Justice system doesn't work either. People with the better lawyers and the best arguments win. But, it is not just government workers who cheat, but most people. We need to fire and take away pensions but what you said about honor among thieves does apply here. Even thieves have rights.
People cheat so a written test should never be the only criteria for proving one has learned the material. This is why people who drive are required to complete two tests. The written (that is just a joke really) and the actual driving test. With all that is happening with the rails lately, all conductors, pilots, bus drivers all should have a refresher course every year along with a physical. What happened on the Hudson line should be a wake up call to everyone responsible for someone else's safety. "When will we ever learn/" View Comment
Who likes their taxes to go up? I don't know of anyone who wants their taxes to go up for any reason. We don't have a say of how our taxes are used. I got really upset during the last Presidential Election campaign how many people in this country don't pay taxes. I didn't have children cause I couldn't afford a two bedroom apartment. When I found out how many people were having children they could not afford to have and I was paying over $30,000 a year so that they could have them, I got really angry. When my father at age 92 (a former Vet) needed government help to stay in a nursing home, it took the social worker months of intensive scrutiny over my parent's financial situation, to allow him Medicaid, it really killed me. My mother had to pay lots of money in penalties and for a lawyer. They worked and paid their own way all their lives but their income was modest. A nursing home was $15-20000 a month! But paying for others to milk the system when they do not deserve it, really upsets me. I walk the streets of White Plains everyday and believe me it is easier not working, than trying to work and contribute. I have disabilities but yet I paid my way and worked till I could retire. Wake up people, there are lots of people we are funding that do not deserve it. Women have children and claim the fathers don't live with them or work to claim public funds. We are paying for this and they keep having more and more children. Not every mother is a great parent. I worked with many of those who were neglected and abused by their own mothers. It is not a good thing. Vote people and become active in every fight you feel passionate about! But knocking someone else for how they should feel, is just not productive. Otherwise, I am enjoying this conversation! Have a nice day! It is beautiful outside!
No one is telling you how to live but government can help those of us shut out of areas to be allowed in. Racial and Ethnic divides exist everywhere and there were many communities in Westchester that did not allow certain groups to live in them. This is why there has been an attempt to integrate the county. Integration is a tough sell and most people in exclusive neighborhoods don't want certain people near them. I live in a co-op and there are people living in my building on public assistance and there is a woman who has been bringing this up at annual meetings. You can not discriminate when it comes to housing and it will take this country a long time to allow for mixing of all peoples. This is what happened to Detroit. People are living in areas of the city where there are no services because the city can't afford to give it to them. These neighborhoods are mostly in the abandoned areas. Look at Hawaii that was offering the homeless air flights to leave the island. Who wants the homeless and poor in their neighborhood? I don't know anyone who does. View Comment
Politics is all about the petty stuff. Look at Congress and what they spend our taxes on. Influencing the few voters out there is done this way. Should Astorino compliment Cuomo? I don't like everything that Astorino has done but he was the first Republican I ever voted for. I don't like him for Governor and truthfully he doesn't have much of a chance in winning against Cuomo. When Cuomo runs again and again like his father did, I will definitely hope the Republicans put up a worth candidate against him. This is how I came to vote for Astorino cause Spano was County Executive for too too long.
