Eastchester, Bronxville Officials Take Special #IceBucketChallenge

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Sure, you’ve seen countless “Ice Bucket Challenges,” since the charitable endeavor kicked off, but you’ve probably never seen one like the Eastchester, Bronxville and Tuckahoe Police and Fire Departments put on.

Many top Tuckahoe volunteers “took the plunge” and participated in a very special “ALS Ice Bucket Challenge,” that featured Yonkers ALS patient Patrick Quinn, and a fire hose.

Things got started in the village last week, when Tuckahoe Mayor Steve Ecklond was nominated for the challenge by his deputy clerk, which led to his “acceptance of the challenge,” when he dumped a bucket of ice water over his own head in front of Village Hall.

With the challenge complete, a cold, wet Ecklond nominated Bill Williams, new village administrator David Burke and Tuckahoe Police Chief John Costanzo and his department had something much bigger in mind.

Led by Tuckahoe Lt. Margaret Belles, members of the Tuckahoe, Eastchester and Bronxville Police and Fire Departments were joined by volunteers from the Eastchester Volunteer Ambulance Corp. on Elm Street for the special challenge.

Armed with a fire hose, Quinn, atop a fire truck, made it rain over several dozen volunteers, who cheered and shivered while they were sprayed for several minutes before breaking into a celebratory applause.

“We accept the challenge, to participate in ice bucket challenge as well as donating to ALS Quinn4TheWin foundation – and we challenge others to participate and do the same,” a representative from the Tuckahoe Police Department said before getting hosed down.

Quinn, 31, is a former standout athlete that attended Iona Prep and then graduated from Iona College. The Queens resident was diagnosed with ALS in March of last year.

Belles said that her department would donate $500 to the Quinn For the Win charity, and challenged others to do the same.

“Patrick was an athlete who is now battling ALS,” she said. “We are proud to participate in raising awareness and funding to help eradiate ALS.”

Ecklond and Tuckahoe isn’t the first municipality to get in on the ALS “Ice Bucket Challenge. Earlier this summer, several elected officials took the plunge in Pelham, Greenburgh, Yonkers and countless other municipalities. Quinn himself has also been active in challenging others to raise awareness, including a challenge to the Woodlands Football team.

Donations to the ALS Foundation can be completed here.
