Fred Salanitro, who could be found on the town Board of Trustees for the past five years, has been sworn in as the new Eastchester Town Justice, joining Judge Janet Madonia Calano, the town’s first female justice, who was appointed in 2011.
Last month, Porco vacated his $42,000-per-year position amid a state investigation into allegations that he mistreated a “significant” number of traffic law and vehicle cases during his 22-year career.
By agreeing to leave his post, the state Commission on Judicial Conduct dropped the inquiry.
Salanitro, who has worked as a lawyer for 25 years, will complete Porco’s four-year term, which is set to expire on Dec. 31 next year. His position on the town board will need to be filled according to Eastchester community liaison Patricia George.
Eastchester’s newest judge could not be reached for comment on his appointment on Thursday. He officially took office on Tuesday, Oct. 21.
“His legal expertise helped in many contract negotiations,” Supervisor Anthony Colavita said in a statement. “He helped form the Eastchester Environmental Awareness Committee and worked diligently to keep the town’s budget under the 2 percent tax cap. Judge Salanitro brings a great deal of experience to the bench and will make a great addition to Eastchester Court.”
