In an effort to “alleviate the annual burden on the village clerk and staff of the four-month process of conducting a general village election,” and reduce the costs that come along with a yearly election, the board is determining whether or not to increase term limits for trustees and the mayor from two to four years beginning as son as next year.
The topic was to be discussed at the latest Trustees’ meeting, but was tabled as they continue to investigate the issue.
The trustees believe that by increasing the terms of officials, it will “result in a more efficient use of time for elected officials, reducing the costs of well qualified people who may wish to run for office, but may be dissuaded from doing so because of the burden, financially and otherwise, of having to campaign for office every other year.”
If the resolution is eventually put up to vote and accepted, the schedule for elections would drastically change:
- 2016: There would be a vote on two trustees for a three-year term.
- 2017: A vote on two trustees and a mayor for four-year terms.
- 2018: Three-year term for one judge.
- 2019: Four-year terms for two trustees.
- 2020: No election.
- 2021: Four-year terms for two trustees, the mayor’s seat and a judge.
- 2022: No election.
- 2023: Four-year terms for two trustees.
- 2024: No election.
- 2025: Four-year terms for two trustees, the mayor’s seat and a judge.
- 2026: No election.
While the subject has been tabled for the time being, it is expected to be revisited before it is potentially put to a public vote later this year.
