Officials confirmed that there was a fire that stemmed from a second-floor bedroom of a Hathaway Road at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday in Eastchester.

The two homeowners were able to escape the fire unharmed, but six of the 30 cats they care for died in the flames, officials said. The family reportedly were running an emergency animal rescue inside the home.

Fire crews from Eastchester and New Rochelle responded to the fire, and were able to mostly contain the damage to the second story of the home. The cause of the fire is under investigation, though it is not believed to have been started under suspicious circumstances.
