LEWISBORO, N.Y. The Lewisboro Lions Club donated a specialized patient carrier to the Lewisboro Volunteer Ambulance Corps in memory of Laurie Gagliardi, a life member of the Ambulance Corps who died in an auto accident last December.
The device is a 2-in-1 backboard called a Scoop. It can be separated into two halves making it ideal for patients with hip and pelvic injuries.
It is especially useful for geriatric patients where hip injuries tend to occur after falls, LVAC Captain Bob Stoddard said. The Scoop minimizes patient movement as rescuers slide both halves of the stretcher under the patient and then its locked in place, minimizing movement of the patients spine or hips during lifting and transporting.
It also provides excellent head and lateral support, the captain added, and its lightweight design and high-density polyethylene foam construction also makes it ideal for water rescue situations.
Lions Club President Darryl Caprio said Gagliardi was well known throughout Lewisboro and making the donation in her name was appropriate.
Once again, the Lions are very pleased to support LVAC in a meaningful way, Caprio said. Laurie Gagliardi was a friend to all in the community and were honored to make this donation in her memory.
Several years ago the Lions donated state-of-the-art carbon monoxide monitors that are being used on both LVAC ambulances.
