FAIRFIELD, Conn. A New Haven man was accused of forging a pair of checks from Fairfield country clubs earlier this year. Jesus Agosto, 53, has been accused of attempting to take more than $4,000 using altered checks, according to police reports.
In May, a bank teller at Fairfield County Bank on the Post Road reported a suspicious check to police. A man tried to cash a check for $2,763 written by the Country Club of Fairfield. The check issuer told investigators that it had originally been written for $278, according to police reports.
The man grabbed his identification and the check and ran out of the bank when questioned, police say. The check was later cashed at a bank in Orange, according to police reports.
A second check, this one for $2,572, was cashed at a bank in Westport in July, police say. The check issuer, Brooklawn Country Club, told police the original amount was $278. The check had been washed and given a new amount and payee, according to police reports.
Orange Police arrested Agosto in connection with the check forgery in that town, according to state court records. He was taken to Bridgeport Superior Court to be charged by Fairfield Police on Tuesday.
Agosto was charged with two counts of second-degree forgery, third-degree larceny and attempted third-degree larceny, all felonies. He was held on a combined $2,000 bond and was arraigned Tuesday.
