William B. Ward Elementary School recently launched the We Future Cycle source-separation program, a countywide initiative focused on reducing student waste.

With Ward's inclusion, all elementary schools in the district have embraced the program, along with Isaac E. Young Middle School, according to a release from the district.

Albert Leonard Middle School and New Rochelle High School are expected to come on board in the next couple of months, said We Future Cycle Executive Director Anna Giordano.

A total of 18 Westchester County schools are now part of the initiative focused on reducing their carbon footprint.

The program will reduce students' lunchroom waste by at least 90 percent by diverting their waste into recycling and composting streams - and teaching kids to be environmentally responsible, the release said.

As part of the We Future Cycle initiative, students hear presentations on how the program works and why garbage affects everyone. The We Future Cycle team help students learn how to source-separate their waste.

"If you pack your child's lunch, try to go waste free," We Future Cycle suggests, and shares the following tip: Use reusable plastic containers to pack snacks instead of plastic bags.
