According to the state’s assessment, which tested third through eighth graders for proficiency in math and English language arts, 41 percent of Westchester County students were at grade level in English language arts and 40 percent of county students were proficient in math.
Statewide, the results were even lower, with just 31 of students meeting or exceeding proficiency standards in both the ELA and math standard.
In Eastchester, 61 percent of students were proficient in language arts, and 62 percent in math. According to Moran, the students’ performance is closely aligned and consistent with comparable high-performing districts in the region.

The lower results do not reflect a decrease in performance for schools or students, but a raising of standards to reflect college and career readiness according to state Education Commissioner John B. King Jr.
"I understand these scores are sobering for parents, teachers, and principals. It's frustrating to see our children struggle,” King said in a news release accompanying the results. “But we can't allow ourselves to be paralyzed by frustration; we must be energized by this opportunity. The results we've announced today are not a critique of past efforts; they're a new starting point on a roadmap to future success.”
Moran said that the test scores are just one of many ways Eastchester assesses and prepares students for their future.
“The scores released this week provide an opportunity to better align our curricula and teaching to meet the rigors of the Common Core Standards and Assessments,” Moran said to parents. “Establishing new baseline measurement of student learning helps us recognize the magnitude of challenge we face in preparing all students to be successful in college and careers.”
