EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – Eastchester elementary students got into the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day, singing and dancing to the beat of a mix of classic Irish folk songs and contemporary hits for a capacity crowd at Greenvale.

Students from Greenvale Elementary, the middle and high school - all of whom were trained in town at the Hendry School of Irish Dance – performed in front of an audience of classmates and parents donning every shade of green on the color wheel.

Songs ranged from “Danny Boy,” a classic Irish ballad, to Kesha’s “Timber.” Bob Williams, who had a granddaughter performing, said that it was a good way to start his St. Patrick’s Day.

“Our granddaughter works so hard at dance, she’s there several times a week,” he said with his wife, Patty. “It’s great to see all her hard work pay off in front of all these people.”

The dancers entertained the crowd with several reels and jogs that were choreographed by high school student Cathrena Collins, who also danced and played the keyboard. Fifth grade student Pierce O’Connell also performed “a series of Irish classics on his accordion.

Jason Donnelly, who was watching his niece on Monday, said that dancing may become a part of his annual St. Patrick’s Day celebration.

“We do the normal St. Patrick’s Day things everyone else does, with the corned beef, the cabbage, some soda bread and maybe a Guinness,” he said. “Who knows, after watching this, maybe we need to include some Irish step dancing each year.”
