EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – While children in Tuckahoe have enjoyed several school days off due to the harsh winter, some school districts are being forced to take away planned vacation days in the spring.

Following Wednesday’s snow day, the district has announced that all Tuckahoe schools will be in session on Monday, April 21, which was scheduled to be the first day of spring recess.

State law mandates that schools be in session no less than 180 days, including Personal Development Days. In the 2012-13 school year, schools were particularly affected by Hurricane Sandy, which canceled a full week of classes in November 2012.

“It’s frustrating, because you have to accommodate for the children during the snow days, and then you have to sometimes alter plans when scheduled days off are taken away,” Tuckahoe resident Maggie Reilly said while picking up her son, Bobby, at William E. Cottle  School. “But that’s what it is. It’s not the district’s fault. I’m sure they’re frustrated too.”

If more snow blankets the area, forcing further closures, more days are expected to be taken away from Spring Recess. In case of emergency, the district is also prepared to subtract days from Winter Recess, which begins on Feb. 17.

“The kids are always so excited to get their off days, but they don’t realize there’s a limited number of them,” Bill Reynolds – father of William and Shane – said on Thursday. “We had nothing planned personally, but you have to feel for the people who already planned a vacation or something on the days that get taken away.”
