Eastchester Little League Wins District Title

VALHALLA, N.Y. – Luca Fava put an end to Eastchester's three-year drought as he hit a line drive to send the winning run over the plate and take the Little League District 20 title in the 11/12 baseball division over Rye on Tuesday night.

Fava, who joined Eastchester this season, sent a line drive that dropped between two Rye outfielders in the bottom of the sixth inning with one out. He said he wanted to do his best to help Eastchester get over the hump.

“I thought that we’ve got to change something the last year,” Fava said. When the ball came off the bat, he said he knew it would drop and just hoped the run would score.

Eastchester and Rye gave an encore performance of Monday’s seesaw battle with another wild finish at Pat Henry Field. Rye’s 12-8 victory Monday forced a Game 2 because Eastchester had yet to lose in the double elimination tournament.

The game was tied 6-6 in the sixth inning when Rye threatened with runners on first and second and two outs but could not drive in a run. In the bottom of the sixth, Eastchester got a runner in scoring position and pinch ran with Matt Stern, who crossed the plate to give Eastchester the championship with the 7-6 victory.

Stern, who has been on the team for the past three years, was relieved after the two tough games.

“It’s about time. Finally. It feels great,” Stern said.
